Women in attendance travelled from all over Victoria and beyond, to gather for the breakfast in Melbourne themed ‘Its not about luck.’ We heard from an impressive line-up of female leaders, who inspired us with their personal and professional journeys about achieving success in a male-dominated industry.
Kate Carnell, CEO of Beyond Blue, explained how her motivation came from wanting to make a difference and believing “if you are not part of it, you don’t get to whinge”.Denise Campbell-Burns, the first female President for the CFMEU’s Pulp & Paper Division, spoke of seizing moments and opportunities, and believing in yourself to take a chance and allow others to take a chance on you. Kersten Gentle, CEO of the Frame & Truss Manufacturing Australia (FTMA), was MC for event and she also shared her insights.
All of the speakers shared similar experiences surrounding: work-life balance; the importance of mentoring; work flexibility and advice; and, they established, that it’s not just about luck for women to succeed and, while barriers exist, there are ways to overcome them.
The Victorian WFTN breakfast follows other successful WFTN state gatherings in NSW, OLD and SA so far this year. We are looking forward to the next meeting and we encourage anyone who may be interested in attending to join us!

2012 Rural Women’s Award winner announced:
Congratulations Michelle Freeman
Michelle Freeman has been announced winner of the prestigious Rural Women’s Award, at a ceremony at Parliament House in Melbourne on 7 February. An independent panel chose Ms Freeman from a field of four finalists.
She has been awarded a $10,000 bursary to support her leadership development and implement her proposed award project. The award recognises the contribution Victorian women make to primary industries. Michelle was selected as a result of her commitment to the future sustainability of primary industries, her potential to achieve and deliver benefits to the industry, her leadership, and how she shares skills and knowledge with her communities. Michelle is a member of the WFTN Advisory Group and a very worthy winner!
As you may be aware, ForestWorks has committed to hosting the WFTN.
ForestWorks recognises that the success of the network is achieved through the input and involvement of women in the industry and keeping connected, therefore we are seeking to establish a WFTN Advisory Committee to progress and oversee the networks ongoing success.
We propose that the Advisory Committee operate using a decentralised structure as supported by the workshop feedback and tap into and support the various regional / sector groups that have identified themselves as part of the initial project.
The aim of the Advisory Committee representation is to be reflective of the diverse roles women have within the industry to ensure its relevance and accessibility. We are seeking a group of approximately 10 -12 women who have the passion, commitment and time to volunteer to drive this fantastic initiative as so many of you have already demonstrated. We would hope to have women from across the sectors of the industry as well as the major regions being represented in the Advisory Committee.
ForestWorks in hosting the network will undertake administration and coordination of the Advisory Committee meetings (usually teleconference and to be determined by the Committee as to how often), manage the database, manage the website to ensure it is up-to-date with relevant information and promote the WFTN activities through our already successful Skills Update e-newsletter and proposed WFTN newsletter.
