Victorian Workshop Success

The second state-based workshop in our series was held last Friday in Yering. 40 people attended the workshop to hear Parliamentary Secretary for Forestry and Fisheries, Gary Blackwood, who noted that women are a vital part of dynamic timber communities as well as the direct workforce and have often been leaders within those communities. Mr Blackwood also commended the organisers and attendees of the workshop, saying the Establishing a Women in Forests and Timber Network project is a great new initiative to raise the profile of women working in the forest and wood products industry.

Cathy McGowan led a session on Leadership Skills and Mentoring, which had some very positive feedback. Lisa Marty spoke on the current opportunities available, including the Victorian Honour Roll of Women and the Victorian Diversity Register.

I encourage you to nominate a Victorian woman from the forest and wood products industry or your community.

Supporting Australian Forest Industries Petition

An online petition has begun to highlight the fact that Australia’s forestry community, workers and businesses object to misleading campaigns by environmental groups that aim to shut down Australia’s native forestry industries. The petition calls for the Senate to recognise native forestry’s contributions to regional Australia.

Outcomes from the Tasmanian workshop

The first of our state workshops was held in Launceston, Tasmania last Friday.

Twenty-five participants were welcomed by Karen Hall, forest contractor, who noted that the most empowering moments are when women come together and share their experiences. This set the

scene for the workshop, with guest speaker Ruth Paterson agreeing that a network such as the Women in Forests and Timber Network is something of value and provides an opportunity for women to have their say.

Jillian Roscoe, Manager Policy and Projects at the Victorian Association of Forest Industries, spoke on how the project came about, noting that 150 women had already registered their interest in being a part of such a network.

Kersten Gentle, Executive Officer of Frame and Truss Manufacturers Association Australia, led an empowering session most relevant to those in Tasmania titled what to do when things go pear-shaped. Kersten’s heartfelt examples and suggested actions were well received by the women.

The workshop also provided participants with the opportunity to have their say on how they think a network should work. This feedback, along with feedback from the national workshop and other state workshops, will be fed into a scoping study and released for comment early next year...

National workshop

We are delighted to say the Establishing a Women in Forests and Timber Network national workshop was a huge success! ...

47 women and men in the industry participated in the workshop, which aimed to engage participants on what they would like to see in a new network, which could raise the profile of women in forests and timber as well as facilitate networking, engagement and professional development.

. ...

Senator Claire Moore from Queensland provided an inspirational keynote address detailing the long history of women in forestry and the importance of our industry and the role of women, noting that although women only make up 13% of our workforce, they take on almost every role from forester to sawmill worker to CEO.

. ...

Cathy McGowan, an expert on developing rural women’s networks, led a discussion on the key elements of networks, as well as their value. Workshop participants provided ideas and input on what they would like to see in a women in forests and timber network and how it might work. These views, along with the views of women from upcoming workshops in Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia will form the plan for a network going forward.

About the network

The establishment of the Women in Forests and Timber Network has been made possible through funding from the Commonwealth Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and is being managed by VAFI with the support of a project steering committee. The steering committee comprises representatives from a range of sectors and locations in the forest and timber industries, including the CFMEU Forest and Forest Products Division, Frame and Truss Manufacturers Australia, Forest Industries Federation Western Australia (FIFWA), Victorian Association of Forest Industries (VAFI), ForestWorks and Timber Communities Australia. The steering committee has organised a number of initial workshops to ensure we hear from women about what they would like to contribute to the network and what they would like to gain from it.

The Women in Forests and Timber Network initiative includes:

  • Providing a contact point and website for the network, networking and related opportunities
  • Undertaking a scoping study to explore needs and options in establishing a network
  • Delivering a series of workshops across Australia to consult on options for a network and to support leadership, networking and development.

This project is supported by funding from the Australian Government, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry under Australia’s Farming Future and specifically as part of its program to build leadership and representative capacity of women in primary industries.
