Employing an apprentice or trainee

A quick reference guide to the steps involved in employing an apprentice or trainee.

STEP 1: Employ an apprentice or trainee

  • Hire the employee yourself
  • Use a Group Training Company

STEP 2: Contact an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) and complete a Training Contract

AACs can:
  • advise on incentives for employing apprentices/trainees
  • advise on apprenticeships/traineeships
  • advise on employment through Group Training Companies
  • assist with the choice of correct qualification.

Both the employer and apprentice sign the Training Contract.

STEP 3: Choose an RTO to assist with training delivery and to issue the qualification

The apprentice/trainee must be enrolled within three months of them commencing work and a full Training Plan completed.

STEP 4: Employer, apprentice/trainee and RTO complete a Training Plan

The Training Plan outlines who will deliver the training and when and where your apprentice/trainee needs to go.

STEP: 5 Claim incentives available

Qualifying empolyers may be eligible for Commonwealth incentives.

STEP:6 Apprentice/Trainee receives training

Employers must follow the training plan to ensure the apprentice/trainee receives on the job training, supervision and assessment according to the requirement of the training plan.

Employer allows the apprentice/trainee to attend the off-the-job training  during normal working hours (this is paid time).

STEP 7: Qualification issued

The RTO will advise on arrangements for issuing the qualification.
