You wouldn't read about it ... Become a Pulp and Paper Production Operator!


Almost every person in Australia uses paper every day.

The newspapers we read, the documents we print - even the toilet paper we use! Most of it is manufactured by the Australian Pulp and Paper Manufacturing sector.

There's a huge range of jobs in this sector, many of them involving working with high-tech machinery and using a lot of skill and accuracy. Some skills take many years to learn and are highly valued. Pulp and paper mills are large and diverse businesses, so a job in this area guarantees a great career that has seen most people work in this sector for their entire life.

What jobs are there?

Most operator positions are quite specialised and are at Certificate II or III qualification (combining on-the-job skills with TAFE study), such as:

  • Recycled Paper Operator
  • Electricity Generation Technician
  • Winder and Dry End Operator
  • Pulp Equipment Operator
  • Paper Production Operator
  • Steam Generation Operator.

The sector also employs maintenance support tradespeople, including:

  • Electricians
  • Fitters
  • Boiler operators.

Senior production and corporate positions may require Certificate IV, Diploma and Degree qualifications; these include:

  • Production/Manufacturing Manager
  • Human Resources Manager
  • Information Technology
  • Financial Manager
  • Quality Controller.

The industry is very supportive of people who want to better their skills and keep learning. There are many types of jobs, so you can really make a career of it.

Who are the employers?

Pulp and paper manufacturers are usually large enterprises. In fact, 98% of Australia's pulp and paper products are produced by only six major manufacturers.
